Mayan Calendar
Mayan
calendar is a complex system of
time-tracking designed and developed by the
ancient Mayan civilization of
America. The Mayan calendar
basically uses several different cycles or methods of keeping
track of time according to astronomic or mythic events.
This calendar gave each day a name, much like our days of the
week. There were 20 day names, each represented by a unique
symbol. 260-day or sacred count calendar was in use throughout
Mesoamerica.
The Mayan calendar
used special glyphs to indicate time
periods, the kin represented one day. The Mayan thought that the
world was created and destroyed 3 times and we are in the latest
creation. The
Mayans used three separate calendars 1.Long Count, 2.
Haab Date, 3.Tzolkin Date.
Long Count
The Long Count is really a mixed base-20/base-18 representation
of a number, representing the number of days since the start of
the Mayan era. It is thus akin to the Julian Day Number.
